What is Positive Aging?

Positive aging is adopting a positive mindset of aging as a natural way of life. Rather than viewing aging in a negative light as something to be endured, aging is viewed as a positive journey of transition. Positive aging encompasses the elements of psychological, spiritual, physical, and social support. And beyond practicing positivity and holding positive mindset, it also includes all the other beneficial things someone does because they are in a positive frame of mind such as exercise, maintain a healthy diet, social interaction, living in the present moment, and strengthening your spiritual side.

Why Positive Aging?

There are plenty of benefits of practicing positive aging, notably enhanced physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. More specifically, individuals practicing positive aging will likely become:

More proactive about health

More resilient to illness, enjoying improved immunity

Less stressed-out, reducing the likelihood of developing chronic diseases/disorders

More in touch with your spiritual side

More energetic

More joyful and happy

Who Will Positive Aging Help?

We are never too young to practice positive aging. But the practice is most beneficial for people over 50 years of age when the marks of aging begin to appear. The younger the senior citizen, the easier it is to replace old habits with positive aging habits.

The Building Blocks of Positive Aging

Aging is a lifelong process, and physical and mental decline occurs throughout one’s life span. With the right attitude and a healthy spirit, aging can bring about much joy and many rewards. As individuals, we possess varying levels of physical, mental and emotional strengths and weaknesses. For most able seniors, the goal is to adjust in your life so you can better cope with the marks of aging, such as changed to your appearance, bodily functions, and mental health, and even life-threatening diseases.

What follows are the building blocks for a foundation for successful and positive aging. Based on David Lereah’s critically acclaimed book, The Power of Positive Aging, the building blocks are:

  • Mindfulness (Live in the Present). Live in the present moment, free from worries about the past or future

  • Practicing Positivity. Positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on the bright side of life and expects positive results.

  • Tap Your Spirit (The Power of Me). Focus on growing your spirit while your body is decaying, and you will age successfully.

  • The Four A’s. Accept aging to fully live in your senior years. Adapt to each mark of aging that comes your way. Appreciate your life today, not how it was yesterday. Successful aging is all about attitude. Be proud of who you are.

  • Stay Social (The Power of Us). We are all in this life together. If we help each other as we age, we can experience joy rather than suffering.

  • Stay Balanced. People who lead well-balanced lives are at peace with themselves.
